Proudest thing I ever did... When I was really young back in kindergarten, there was a classmate who had leukemia. She started off the year there, and then become more and more absent. At one point, I think she was absent for a month. She came back in one time. I think, now that I'm an adult, that her parents took her in to say good bye. It was winter, so she was wearing a parka with the hood pulled all the way up. The children were excited to see her; they all knew she had leukemia. They all wanted to be supportive, of course. She had kept her hood up, and the other children started pestering her to take it down. After enough cajoling, she finally took it down. She was, of course, bald from the chemotherapy. The children were horrified. They stopped talking to her. The teacher had called for story time, and of course, everyone sat down. She had a wide circle around her, with children in little clumps and groups. This was the first time I felt a certain disgust with our species. I remember, very clearly, her shy smile as I sat down next to her. No words were spoken, and after story time, she left. I never saw her again. !
